Student filmmakers to strut their stuff at festival parties and a big group of young women have joined an event for female entrepreneurs to discuss the obstacles they face in the workplace, from male managers to hiring and promotion.

Cinema Direct's Young Women in Entrepreneurship is looking to boost the number of young female directors to a total of 500 by the end of the year to help kickstart the women's creative sector. The programme is jointly organised by Hollywood actress and actress of the same name Jessica Chastain and director/writer of the film, Jennifer Ewen Davies, along with other young women.

The Women in Entrepreneurship programme aims to provide students with an overview of how businesses work, how to identify risks and how to use existing skills to help them move to a new stage in their entrepreneurial career.

"Young women can make a significant difference to a business, and they have a lot more confidence than they would ever have had if they hadn't been working in the business," says Davies, 32, who made her directorial debut with director Peter Falk in 2011. "I was really inspired by her attitude, by her resilience, and I thought, 'How can I give young women a head start?'"

In her documentary The Women and the Internet, Davies argues that young women can turn their careers into major contributions to society by making early and meaningful contributions to business.

"We were hoping that the conference would be inspiring for other women to go and see what they could learn from us and help us build that kind of business in their own way, that was their business, but also help them see how they might make it a bigger business in the future. Young women are in control, they know how to work it, they have the ability to make a difference," says Davies.

Young Women in Entrepreneurship is the result of the annual Women's Entrepreneuria programme organised by a number of international organisations including Cannes Film Festival, the University of California, San Diego and the Toronto Film Festival. The programme was launched in 2011 and will be supported by two films: the film The Life of an Entrepreneur, starring Jane Fonda, and Inside Entrepreneurship, by a number of high-profile women including Sophia Loren and Jessica Chastain, whose films include Bitter Tears, an autobiography of her first venture, in which she was the subject of one of the most successful films of all time.

Young Women in Entrepreneurship has attracted attention for the event. Davies says there are hundreds of people from all walks of life from the entertainment and cultural sectors to the fashion, technology, business and finance worlds.
